Google Cloud finally notched a W.
Microsoft and Amazon both have strategic AI partnerships. Both with private companies at the forefront of AI development.
Google Cloud, the third player in the public cloud, hadnāt yet announced anything big.
That changes today. Theyāve partnered with Replit.
Why is this big?
Replit isnāt an AI-first company like OpenAI or HuggingFace. Theyāre a cloud-based development environment for software engineers.
They have a killer AI feature though: their AI pair programmer. It goes up against Github Codespaces, which has been a wild success. Replit is betting it will onboard the next generation of engineers to their platform.
Google is betting that too. Hence the partnership. It means Google Cloud services will be on Replit, Replit will be on Google Cloud, and Replit is the āpreferred IDEā of GCP.
Itās hard to gauge how much this deal is worth, or whoās getting the better end of the deal.
But if Replitās plan pans out, then Google wins big too.
š¬ Elon Musk says halt AI development, now

Itās hard to understate what happened in AI yesterday.
Elon Musk and other top AI researchers signed a petition titled āPause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter.' It begs AI labs to stop developing AI more powerful than GPT-4.
For six months.
They cite a large risk to humanity if the pace of AI development continues.
āā¦recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one ā not even their creators ā can understand, predict, or reliably control.ā
Others who signed include Steve Wozniak and Andrew Yang.
So itās this letter versus billions of dollars in corporate funding. Funding that demands innovation at the fastest pace possible.
We doubt itāll impact anything.
Weāre also terrified of the future theyāre trying to prevent.

Weāve got to admit, itās a littleā¦odd.
You can try it for yourself on Hugging Face.
Itās memey now, and poor quality. Weāve seen quite a few of these with shutterstock image watermarks. Big giveaway that its training set is public images.
But when Dalle for generative AI images came out, something changed.
Everyone started making silly stuff with it. That led to its explosion in popularity.
Weād expect to see something similar here.
