🤖 Why Google finally added AI to search

PLUS: More military AI

Let’s round out this AI week strong.

Three stories coming in hot.

🤓 Google promises AI chat for Google search

Disappointed that Google’s Bard wasn’t anything like ChatGPT?

You’re not alone.

Google hears you. CEO Sundar Pichai announced they’d be adding conversational AI chat into Google Search.

We know what you’re thinking. “Great. So...why didn’t they do that from the start?”

Best guess? They wanted to see how people used Bard before they added it to the number one search engine on the planet.

Fake facts from an AI are a problem when you’re on that level.

But at this point, announcements are Google’s preference.

Let’s see some real launches!

🚀 The US Navy will fight drug trafficking with AI

The US Navy announced they’ll expand AI operations into Central America. They’re using AI to fight the drug trade.

What a 21st century evolution.

Wait, back up. Are we getting AI supersoldiers? What does that mean?

Far more boring, for now. They were working with countries like Bahrain to learn how AI-powered tactics - like unmanned boats - could help them in battle. That operation was in the middle east.

Now, they’re deploying that same tech in Central America.

AI and unmanned operations are nothing new to the military. What’s curious is what we mentioned before. Many modern innovations are born out of secret military projects.

Five years from now, some cool new tech will come out from some military project. Guaranteed.

🤯 Google’s new supercomputer blows Nvidia’s out of the water

oooo, look at us, our supercomputer is better!

Shots fired.

Google claims it has a faster AI supercomputer than Nvidia, the king of AI supercomputers.

For now, they're sort of right.

Google’s new Tensor Processing Unit, or TPU, does pack a punch.

They claim 1.7x improvements in speed and 1.9x improvements in power efficiency. That’s compared to Nvidia’s A100 chip.

Curious. Nvidia released a new chip recently, the H100. And Google didn't offer comparisons on that.

Probably because it’s not so impressive compared to Nvidia's newest stuff.

Still, a big deal. AI startups like Midjourney use Google’s TPUs to train models and generate images.

And like we said before, Google needs an AI win.
