šŸ¤– Why Google’s rival AI divisions are merging to take on OpenAI

PLUS: New York Fashion Week goes AI

We just love how Google Brain + DeepMind merging becomes…

Google DeepMind.

Really pulled out all the stops with that naming.

šŸ‘€ Alphabet merging AI groups to take on OpenAI

The enemy of my enemy is…restructuring under my division?

Google has two split AI efforts. Google Brain, which it developed internally, and DeepMind, which it acquired in 2014.

They haven’t always been the best of friends. In fact, they allegedly view each other as rivals.

It’s time to put those differences aside. Google announced they’re merging the two groups.

ā€œBy creating Google DeepMind, I believe we can get to that future faster. Building ever more capable and general AI, safely and responsibly, demands that we solve some of the hardest scientific and engineering challenges of our time.ā€

Demis Hassabis, DeepMind CEO

In what can only be an olive branch, the DeepMind CEO will be head of the new division.

It’s clear why this is happening. AI is an existential threat to Google’s business if they don’t get it right.

They have to get it right.

Fashion is the latest industry to embrace AI.

Maison Meta, an AI fashion studio, produced the first ever AI fashion week in New York.

Designers will create their garments in generative AI apps like Midjourney. They’ll let virtual models wear them, walking runways from around the world.

Here’s the wildest part. They'll make the top three pieces into physical items you can buy.

ā€œAI fashion week hopes to pave the way for a new realm of creation,ā€ he said. ā€œWe really think the AIFW platform will make big waves in the fashion industry and showcase what you can do and how creative you can be when it comes to AI and fashion.ā€

Cyril Foiret, founder of Maison Meta

One of the hardest parts of fashion design is working with the materials when creating a product.

Does this cut out the grunt work, and provide a lower barrier to entry into the fashion world?

Or is this an affront to the industry?

😬 Webflow ends a ton of AI startups with this new feature

Source: Webflow

All those AI tools for generating a website in seconds have a big competitor.

Webflow. The well-funded startup for…designing websites without coding experience.

They, of course, announced a grab bag of AI features. And if I were one of those AI tools, I’d be scared.

  • In-app tutorials based on questions ā€œHow do I do x?ā€

  • GPT-like instructions ā€œAdd three columns here with this contentā€

  • Transform your text with AI ā€œTranslate to Spanish, make it shorterā€

  • Generate an entire website from a prompt. ā€œBuild me a website based on this template with this custom contentā€

You can even say ā€œmake this website look like xā€ and it’ll handle it, no problem.

This is the danger of building an existing company’s product with an AI twist.

That company can also build their product with an AI twist.
