šŸ¤– IBM prepares to replace thousands of jobs with AI

PLUS: Godfather of AI has a warning

How long do you think it will be until we see a top 100 song using AI?

We give it under a year.

😬 OpenAI is serious about getting paid

Want to use GPT-4? You’ve got two ways.

One, pay OpenAI directly. Two, use a service that pays OpenAI directly.

A github repo has a third way. It’s free. And OpenAI isn’t happy about it.

Github user Xtekky’s repo, called gpt4free, allows anyone to access GPT-4 without paying.

The secret? It uses APIs from other services, like you.com, that pay for GPT-4.

That’s not cool, according to OpenAI. They sent a cease-and-desist, and gave him five days to comply.

Now, Xtekky says that those websites seem to be cool with it, and if they aren’t he’ll remove them from the service.

Clever. Still, though, he’ll have to comply.

So much for ā€œopenā€ AI.

šŸ‘€ Godfather of AI quits Google, warns of future

Geoffrey Hinton. Not exactly a household name.

But he’s the godfather of not just Google AI, but AI in general. And he resigned from Google.

It’s not only a major blow to Google. He resigned, in part, to be able to speak, and warn, freely about the risks of AI.

Why? He’s alarmed at the pace of the AI arms race.

ā€œIt is hard to see how you can prevent the bad actors from using it for bad things,ā€ he said. ā€œLook at how it was five years ago and how it is now. Take the difference and propagate it forwards. That’s scary.ā€

Geoffrey Hinton, in an interview with The New York Times

His worries are the same as everyone else’s. Relentless progress, but a society that isn’t ready for the implications. Fake text, photo, and video in every corner of the internet.

It might be too late to contain.

🤯 IBMā€˜s CEO wants to replace thousands of jobs with AI

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has a plan to make his company relevant again. And save a bit of money too.

The problem: They’ve got 26,000 non-customer-facing roles.

ā€œI could easily see 30% of that getting replaced by AI and automation over a five-year period.ā€

Let’s break out the calculator…that’s 7,800 jobs lost to artificial intelligence.

It’s not all thinking roles. His examples were ā€œproviding employment verificationā€ and ā€œmoving employees between departments.ā€

So, don’t panic yet. Unless employment verification is your niche.

IBM stock has been flat-to-down over the past 5 years. They’ve got to try something.

And if there’s one thing wall street loves during a recession, it’s job cuts.
