🤖 Why Italy just banned ChatGPT

🤯 Yup. Italy just banned ChatGPT
We of course defer to the Italian government and have ceased offering ChatGPT in Italy (though we think we are following all privacy laws).
Italy is one of my favorite countries and I look forward to visiting again soon!

Remember OpenAI’s little data leak a few weeks ago?
Italy does too. They banned ChatGPT country-wide.
The reasoning? Italy argues that OpenAI isn’t abiding by GDPR laws for data privacy. You’ll recall the data leak exposed some private information to other users.
OpenAI responded by shutting access off in Italy. Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, commented that he thinks its all a misunderstanding.
The regulator responsible for the decision had some more complaints. Namely, the fact the app has no age gate, and how commonly it provides inaccurate information. Those aren’t reasons to shut down ChatGPT, but this felt more like a “hey, while we’re here, work on this" move.
They gave OpenAI 20 days to report on what it had done to improve on the above. If they don't, they face a fine or 20.5 million euros, or 4% of global revenue.
We’re guessing they’ll comply.
🤓 Bloomberg made its own ChatGPT for finance

Bloomberg wasn’t happy enough with ChatGPT, so they made their own.
Introducing BloombergGPT.
Why?
“BloombergGPT outperforms similarly-sized open models on financial NLP tasks by significant margins — without sacrificing performance on general LLM benchmarks”
ELI5?
They made a model that’s better at finance than ChatGPT.
They’ll use it internally, to help augment Bloomberg’s business. They’ll also use it externally to help customers make sense of one of the largest datasets on earth: finance data.
This might be the new norm: industry leaders developing domain-specific LLMs.
Who’s next? HealthcareGPT? EnergPT?
Midjourney is no longer free

RIP fashion Pope.
I hope you’re all happy. You had too much fun making streetwear Pope, and now Midjourney no longer has a free tier.
Yup. We’re as sad as you are.
According to the CEO in a Discord post, Midjourney ended its free tier due to “extraordinary demand and trial abuse.”
Another likely reason? It’s expensive. There are millions of members on the Midjourney Discord. Generating hundreds of thousands of AI images per day is bound to be crazy expensive.
This is a way to save face in the wake of recent scandals, and save some money.
Still, pour one out for the free tier days.
