PLUS: Microsoft moves off Nvidia for AI training

No? Us too.

It’s just not there yet.

😬 Microsoft needs to trim its AI spend…now

That’ll be $5 billion, boss

Microsoft is getting some sticker shock from running ChatGPT.

It’s estimated they’re spending almost $700k a day running ChatGPT. To lower those costs, they’re working on their own chips for training large language models. In secret.

These new chips will help them cut back on their costly reliance on Nvidia. Nvidia is far and away leading the GPU race for AI.

Their GPUS cost a staggering $30,000, but are going for as high as $40,000 on the secondary market (eBay).

Microsoft has some inspiration. Companies like Apple and Google saw smashing success with launching their own chips.

But the cost of AI will only go up.

Microsoft needs some help on lowering those costs if they want to be the AI of choice.

🤯 Reddit says pay up if you train AI on our data

Reddit’s not letting you use all its sweet, sweet, data without paying up.

Reddit, for those not in the know, is home to thousands of micro-communities. Each is centered around different themes and hobbies, like cooking or politics. Millions of people visit it every day to talk about their favorite things.

In other words, it’s a treasure trove of data. Not just for information - for seeing how people interact in a text-based way.

One problem.

They realized that a lot of companies were using that data to train AI models.

Bard and OpenAI both used Reddit data.

For free.

ā€œThe Reddit corpus of data is really valuable,ā€ Steve Huffman, founder and chief executive of Reddit, said in an interview. ā€œBut we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free.ā€

This is the first example of a company bottlenecking data access so that others can’t use it to train any ML models. Twitter did the same, but didn't outright say "Hey, stop training on our data."

Remember 10 years ago when everyone said data is the new oil?

šŸ¤“ Meta AI drops another banger of a paper

Meta AI released a new paper detailing DinoV2, their newest model for computer vision.

It’s open-source, free, and actually quite useful.

The biggest advantage is that the model can train on images that you haven't tagged. That means it can see a video of a dog running, not know it’s a dog, but still identify the parts of the image that are a dog.

Oh, and there’s no fine-tuning required.

But seriously, it must suck to be an AI researcher at Meta.

You do all this work behind the scenes. Years of tireless research. Publish an amazing paper.

And no one cares unless it’s a fun face filter or something.

At least they’re wiping their tears with dollar bills.

This paper won’t be powering your Instagram app, but what’s built on the paper definitely will.
